The Thala Ajith-starrer rakes big numbers at the Tamil box office, outperforming Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Varisu’
Fondly referred to as 'Thala' (Leader/Head) by moviegoers, Tamil actor Ajith Kumar’s ‘Thunivu’ (Tegimpu in Telugu) hit the theatres earlier yesterday. Banking on profound hype, the crime thriller has posted box office numbers that match the star stature of Ajith, reckon fans and trade experts. At the Tamil box office, Ajith’s ‘Thunivu’ clashed with Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Varisu’ and in the ongoing contention between the two Tamil stalwarts, ‘Thunivu’ has emerged as the winner on day one as per trade experts.
By collecting an estimated gross of Rs 17.5 crores, ‘Thunivu’ has surpassed the collections of ‘Varisu’ at the Tamil box office by over one crore and at the worldwide box office, the heist thriller has posted a gross of Rs 30 crores. The Telugu States have contributed an estimated gross of Rs 3 crores. Trade analysts further add that the movie is en route to a blockbuster if it continues to post similar numbers over the weekend.
Helmed by H Vinoth, ‘Thunivu’ aka ‘Tegimpu’ follows the story of a criminal mastermind (Ajith) who robs banks across the city of Chennai with a group of thugs led by him. The ulterior motive and the twists that take place during the heists make up for the rest of the storyline. Music composer Ghibran’s tunes have been widely accepted by the audiences and the cast’s performance, which includes actors Manju Warrier, Ajay, John Kokken, and Samuthirakani, among others, has been met with positive reviews.
