Producer Guneet Monga and filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves accepted the awardToday, March 13, is a historic day in Indian cinema as two Indian productions bring home the Oscar trophies. ‘The Elephant Whisperers' won the award for ‘Best Documentary Short Film’ Helmed by Kartiki Gonsalves and bankrolled by Guneet Monga, the 41-minute-long documentary pulled ahead of ‘Haulout’, ‘How Do You Measure a Year?’, ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’, and ‘Stranger At The Gate’ to win the prestigious trophy.Elizabeth Olsen and Pedro Pascal announced the winners. Kartiki gave the winning speech, thanking the Academy, and her producer, and finally dedicated the award to her “Motherland India.” She started with, “I stand here today to speak for the sacred bond between us and our natural world, for the respect of indigenous communities and empathy towards other living beings we share space with, and finally, for coexistence.”She further continued, “Thank you to the Academy for recognising our film, highlighting indigenous people and animals… To Netflix for believing their sacred tribal wisdom to Guneet, my producer… My mentor and my entire team and finally, to my mother, father, and sister who are up there somewhere, and you are the center of my universe, to my Motherland India.”‘The Elephant Whisperers’, set in Mudumalai National park, tells the story of an orphaned elephant calf lovingly named Raghu by an indigenous couple Bomman and Belli, who take care of him. The bond between the couple and the animal is the focus of the documentary. End of Sentence.’ which won the 2019 Academy Award for "Best Documentary Short Film".Apart from 'The Elephant Whisperers', "Naatu Naatu” from ‘RRR’ won the Oscar for Best Original song and became the first Indian song to win an Academy Award.
