"West reacted to RRR like Indians did," says RajamouliSS Rajamouli has taken Indian films to the global market. After bagging many awards, the maverick filmmaker has added another feather to his cap. He has been awarded the ‘Best Director’ award at the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) in the US for his magnum opus RRR, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan. Founded in 1935, the official page of NYFCC describes the awards as harbingers of the Oscar nominations, which are announced each February. For the uninitiated, the Circle’s awards are also viewed, as a principled alternative to the Oscars, honoring aesthetic merit in a forum that is immune to commercial and political pressures. In his acceptance speech, Rajamouli remarked, “Cinema is like a temple. With RRR, I saw the same kind of reception in the West. They were reacting the same way that Indians did.” He also spoke about the epic pre-interval sequence and said, “It was pure joy of awe, like what in the hell we just witnessed. That is what I want my audiences to feel.”The filmmaker chose traditional Indian attire for the event where he was accompanied by his wife, Rama Rajamouli, his son, and his extended family. Up next, SS Rajamouli will be attending the prestigious Golden Globes Awards on January 11 with the lead actors of the period drama. Ram Charan has already left for Los Angeles with his wife Upasana.
