Born on February 19, 1930, as Kasinadhuni Viswanath in Repalle town of Guntur district, he made his entry into Tollywood as a sound recording artiste. After making his entry into film direction at Annapurna Pictures under director Adurthi Subba Rao and cinematographer K Ramnoth, he debuted as the director with the Telugu film Aatma Gowravam in the year 1965, which won the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film of the year. In his career spanning over seven decades, he has directed 50 feature films and acted in several others. His films are known for immortalising art and for addressing several social issues like the evils of untouchability and the caste system, the dignity and respectability of manual labour, and the dowry system through his highly acclaimed works. His contributions to cinema are unparalleled. United by grief, celebrities, including actors Ravi Teja, Mahesh Babu, and Nani, amongst others, took to social media to mourn the loss of the filmmaker.
