Actor-politician NTR passed away on January 18, 1996Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, aka NTR, was an Indian actor, filmmaker, and politician. The actor starred in over 300 films in his career spanning over three decades and was referred to as Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarwa Bhouma which translates to ’Famous actor in the entire world’.NTR made his big screen debut in 1949 with LV Prasad, directorial Mana Desam. He gained popularity in the 1950s when he became well known for his portrayals of Hindu deities, especially Krishna, Karna, and Rama, roles which have made him a "messiah of the masses", and a prominent figure in the history of cinema.In 1968, he was even conferred with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema. To help the common man he founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982, and served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for three terms, between 1983 and 1995. Having seen the highest of highs and lowest of lows, both on the personal and professional front, NTR passed away at the age of 72 on January 18, 1996, due to cardiac arrest. On his death anniversary, his grandsons Jr NTR and Kalyan Ram visited the NTR Ghat in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
