Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui raised concerns about content-driven cinema amidst the success of big-ticket commercial entertainers Undoubtedly one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is not amused at the kind of cinema ruling the roost in Bollywood. In an indirect dig at films like ‘Pushpa’, ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF2’ calling the shots in Hindi, the ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ actor said, “People have been sitting at home for two years due to the pandemic and exposed to world-class cinema. I thought it would result in enhanced ability regarding the films releasing after the pandemic but looking at the kind of films that are working currently, I think ‘ability’ has gone for a toss. The focus is only on entertaining at a superficial level”. He elaborated his view further by saying “They are doing wonders on screen like sinking planes in water and making fish fly in the sky but these are just spectacles...visual wonders…where is cinema?” questioned Nawazuddin. The star of 'Sacred Games' also expressed his concern over the fate of small content-driven cinema getting a fair representation in the near future. “There are so many big films lined up for release... standing in a queue… I wonder about the fate of the small films,” he said. Big-budget commercial films have rocked the box-offices across India and it sparked a debate on 'content-driven films Vs commercial entertainers'. With media houses trying to crack the reason behind the rising popularity of such films, critics, celebrities and cinema lovers are expressing different opinions on this new trend.
