The makers released the theatrical trailer for the movie on December 31, 2022. In a historic promotional move, the movie’s Malaysian distributor showcased its trailer through a hologram. In the heart of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur where a building's LED facade lit up with a poster of 'Thunivu'. While it's common for buildings to light up in a specific theme for particular events, this is the first time such a thing has been done, in Malaysia for a Tamil movie. The Malaysian distributors shared a video of the same on their official Twitter account. Twitter Ajith will be essaying a grey character in ‘Thunivu’, which also stars Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, Veera, John Kokken, GM Sundar, and Ajay in crucial roles. The heist thriller ‘Thunivu' marks the third collaboration between Ajith, director H Vinoth, producer Boney Kapoor, and cinematographer Nirav Shah. They had earlier collaborated for ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ and Valimai. The movie's trailer clocked over 30 million views within the first 24 hours of its release. The songs released so far, “Chill Chilla,” “Kasethan Kadavulada,” and "Gangstaa”, have met with rave reviews on YouTube, with ‘Thala’ fans grooving to the tunes composed by Ghibran on loop. At the box office, the Thala Ajith-starrer will lock horns with Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Varisu’, releasing in Telugu as Vaarasudu, Chiranjeevi-starrer Waltair Veerayya, Nandamuri Balakrishna-starrer Veera Simha Reddy and Santosh Shobhan’s Kalyanam Kamaneeyam.
